Summary:
SARAO requires a Specialist Consultant/Advisor in the field of Culture, Exhibitions, Museums and Heritage content development. The objective for the specialist is to provide strategic and management master planning for the establishment of a Science Exploratorium to be located in Carnarvon.
The Carnarvon Science Exploratorium (CSE) should showcase the KAT-7, MeerKAT and SKA project including other local attractions particularly those related to the natural and human history of the area e.g. fossils. The exhibition content, through state-of-the-art interactive displays, will need to clearly explain the difference between optical and radio telescopes, provide an overview of the KAT-7, MeerKAT and SKA projects including guest instruments in the area.
The CSE project shall support and promote sustainable tourism growth and educational awareness in the Karoo Rural Node. The Science Exploratorium will be structured and equipped to be able to achieve the following science and tourism goals, without compromising the radio frequency integrity of the SKA site:
- Provide educational information on the science of Radio Astronomy, KAT 7, MeerKAT, SKA and other fields of astronomy on a multi-wavelength approach.
- Serve as an information and tourist activity hub for both domestic and international tourists. The visitor information desk will provide visitors with information on the area’s attractions, lodgings, maps and other tourism related aspects.
- Facilitate the conceptualization and generation of new content to respond to the changing needs of the visitors and also for the benefit of other science centres across the country and internationally.
- Create a space where educational and outreach activities are hosted and outreach content is developed. This should serve as a base for mobile units that will service the Northern Cape Province.
Note: Due to restrictions imposed by the National Lockdown, and our own internal safety measures, SARAO staff primarily work remotely, and therefore any enquiries relating to this Request for Quotations must be directed to the email addresses provided above.
