SARAO wishes to appoint a Virtual Reality applications developer to develop the Virtual Reality (VR) application(s) for the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). The project is initiated by the commercialisation unit to demonstrate commercial products that emanated from the development of the MeerKAT telescope
The application should be developed to such an extent that relevant SARAO staff can be able to add and remove content as they see fit without needing help from the supplier. The suppliers will need to display understanding of the project and also present to SARAO representatives their innovative ways of delivering the project in an efficient and timely manner
The Objectives and Goals of the VR platform:
- The VR platform shall provide an immersive and engaging experience to introduce the
MEERKAT instrument and demonstrate the technologies that emanate from the MeerKAT
radio telescope with a focus on showcasing these technologies. - The VR platform shall highlight the broader application of SARAO technologies across different market verticals to ensure that potential investors, collaborators and partners can see uses of these technologies in their specific fields.
- The VR platform shall demonstrate the flow of information from the time the sub-reflector receives the signal until the time data is stored in the Cape Town data-centre.
- The VR platform shall demonstrate the various components (i.e. Digitizer, Correlator, Tape Library and Iron Hive), their uses and their commercial opportunities. NOTE: this requirement is only applicable to components that have commercial use outside SARAO.
- The VR platform shall demonstrate how the different components interact independently
- and together. - The VR platform shall demonstrate the technologies as if they are ready for use and allow
- the audience to interact with them instantly. - The VR platform shall demonstrate technologies in a simple manner that is easy to understand to ensure that non-technical business people can see the value of these technologies both from a commercial and non-commercial point of view.
- The VR platform shall demonstrate the multi-disciplinary competence of the SARAO team to develop the technologies.
- The interaction will be provided in a creative manner that will ensure interaction, exploration and active engagement by the user.
