SARAO invites the submission of quotations for Heritage Assessment at SARAO Johannesburg office in Observatory.

Deliverables/ Requirements
The scope of work for this category may include, but is not necessarily limited to, the following components as listed below:
The Conservation Architect is required to:
• Provide historical context of the structures on site
• Confirm exiting heritage grading and existing documentation (i.e. HIA document, management plan etc.) from the Gauteng Provincial Heritage Resources Agency
On-site walk-about inspection at all buildings:

• Main observatory
• Printing house
• Stone Masonry base
• Herbert Baker Library
• The dome house – for public sky viewing
• Care takers house
• Office/Exhibit building
• The dome house – for night sky viewing
• Record a full description of the current condition of all buildings. Description must include digital photographs.
• Assess the significance of the identified buildings in terms of the heritage assessment criteria.
• As SARAO want to alter one of the buildings, the relevant specialist must apply on behalf of SARAO for a permit in terms of section 34 of the National Heritage Resources Act.
• There is no Heritage Conservation Management Plan in place at the moment, therefore the Heritage Specialist must be compiled for the maintenance and monitoring of all buildings. The Heritage Conservation Management Plan must be submitted to SAHRA on behalf of SKA SA for review and comment prior to construction.
